| Description | In 1969 the Democrats are in disarray and President Nixon's popularity is standing high. His aims during 1970 will be to make gains in the mid-term elections, withdrawal the US honourably out of the Vietnam War, deal with crime and civil disorder and halt inflation. Democratic Congress has been uncooperative with the President. Nixon has had little success with the disaffected black community. Attempts to clamp down on crime and drug traffic have also failed to show any real results. His use of stringent orthodox methods to combat inflation may not suffice and he may have to accept wage and price controls. Nixon wishes to see a more conservative Supreme Court. The Administration has put Asian nations on notice that they must help themselves more and not rely on unlimited American support in future. The continuing dialogue with the Soviet Union with SALT shows US security is paramount in Nixon's consideration. Europe's defence is regarded as essential to this security. However an isolationist feeling exists in the US and Europe must expect US troops to leave Europe soon. UK/US relations have been encouraging. Also included is a summary of events for 1969.
