Title Visit of US Secretary of State, William P Rogers, to UK 3-4 May (1972)
Description US Secretary of State, Mr Rogers European tour which will include visits to Iceland, London, Brussels, Bonn, Paris and Rome. The object of his journey is to consult with US allies in Europe about the President's visit to Moscow and the centre point will be his presentation to NATO in Brussels in which he will concentrate on the multilateral issues including East/West relations in Europe, the Proposed CSCE and MBFR. US and Soviet aims in Moscow including US/Soviet relations, SALT, China, Vietnam and the Middle East. Mr Rogers aims during his European tour could possibly be to consult his European allies and to prepare a report to President Nixon about European thinking, to give the European allies an opportunity to comment on US intentions in Moscow, to involve the European allies in support for the US line in Moscow. UK aims are to impress upon Mr Rogers the hope that President Nixon's visit will leave the Russian convinced of his continuing commitment to Europe and of his support for the various policies agreed within the North Atlantic alliance.
