| Description | Planning for Prime Minister, Harold Wilson's visit to Ottawa, Canada to meet Mr Trudeau and then to Washington D.C. The main objectives of the visit are to renew and improve relations with Canada and to help Canada make efforts to diversify her external relations to counter her increasing economic dependence on the US. Canada is looking mainly towards the EEC and Japan. Canada is the UK's ninth largest trading partner and is one of the few developed countries self-sufficient in energy. The topics of specific Canadian interest are Canada/EEC relations, GATT XXIV, non-proliferation, and bilateral trade questions. Talks with Kissinger concerning the Prime Ministers proposed visit to the US covered possible subjects to discuss with the President Gerald Ford including the World Economic, Financial and energy problems and the way they effected the US and UK; the Middle East; NATO and Defence problems; East/West relations in the light of the Prime Minister's subsequent visit to Moscow and the common market renegotiations. |
