|
Watergate affair brought down many of the President's closest advisers and has put the President in danger of impeachment. There were misunderstandings between the US and its European allies over differences regarding the Middle East war. The Vietnam peace agreement fell into tatters. Detente with the Soviet Union remained a major Administration goal. Moves made in Congress to secure US troop reductions in Europe were defeated. US/European commercial relations remained difficult with the GATT. The Administration's Trade Bill remains in doubt and the massive turnaround in the US external economic position likely to harden the Administration's attitude on monetary reform.
