| Description | 1974 was the year of the resignation of President Nixon. As a result of Watergate all aspects of US Government are exposed to intense scrutiny. The era of executive supremacy over the legislature has ended. The mid-term elections strengthened the control of the Democrats over Congress which will assert increasing influence over domestic and foreign policy. US/European relations ended the year on a better note. US faith in the UN was reduced. In NATO the American contribution was maintained as was a unified approach to the MBFR and Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) negotiations. The energy crisis - US active in organising cooperation between the oil consuming nations. The domestic economy had a difficult year. Inflation remained 12%. Recession became a reality. Congress passed Trade Reform Act. US/Soviet relations on course. Vladivostok marked a further step forward in the SALT negotiations. In the Middle East Dr Kissinger achieved Israeli disengagement with Egypt and Syria. |
